Stories from Pappy

One room school house had a stove that burned wood in winter.  For Water we had spring in back to get a drink.  Then for the bathroom toilet.  No running water.   Reedy school 4 rooms.  Taught 8 classes in those four rooms. They had a bench, he heard everything taught.  When grade came up to set on the bench, he heard all the other lessons.

When I transferred from James run to Reedy school I was in 3rd grade.   Two months in school in that school teacher promoted you to 4th grade.
Never did get in trouble, made good grades.
Best Friend was Bill Carpenter played football together.
IN HG played Football  and played at Betany College.(Studied Math and Navigation) He was a full back.   Went to WVU with GI Bill of rights got tutition and books, and 91 dollars a month for room and board.  Because you were in the millitary during the war.

Played ping pong during recess in High School.

Loves to garden: Tomatoes, beans, peppers, cucumbers.

Highschool raised tomatoes and cucumbers sold them for money: 1 bushel for tomatoes and 2 dollars a bushel for cucumbers.   A coke was a nickel and cheese crackers were a nickel.  After dinner walk down to the store to get a coke and crackers.  It was mile from house but only a couple of blocks from the school.  We went to Clyde Law Grocery Store.

Also in Growing up he worked on his Grandfather’s Ranch and raised Cattle and Sheep.  Would sell the calves and lambs

*Bushel 40 lbs-Tomato.
