Hard Decison

We got a dog not to long ago. We thought that our family was ready for one. We fenced in our yard over the summer. Olivia really wanted one. In Septemeber we went to the pound and picked a dog. We picked a 1 year old dog thinking that we would do better with a dog that wasn't a puppy.

This dog, ended up being more then we could handle. She had way to much energy. She was constantly jumping up on you regardless of how many times we told her not to. She destoyed lots of things (shoes, clothes, our apple tree, alarm clocks, garbage from the can, leashes.) She also had a problem of nipping at you when you tried to pet her or play with you. She was never mean but she did hurt Olivia and Garret on several occassions with her rough play. We decided that she was not the right dog for our family. We put an add for her in the local classified and yesterday someone called about her and came to see her. He took her. Olivia was really sad that she had lost another pet. She cried and cried. I felt really bad. I didn't want her to be upset but I also knew that we could not keep this dog.

We hope that Kaylee will have a bettter home with him than she did with us. The guy who took her has a farm with animals, has another heeler like Kaylee. Kaylee seemed to like the guy, his son and the other dog right away.

It will be a long time before we will try having a dog again if ever. If we ever get another dog it will have to be a smaller dog and our children will have to be a little bit older.

a little fyi, dogs are considered puppies until they are about 5 years old. The best bet is to get an old dog. Small dogs can be just as much trouble. Also do research into the type of dog. Some dogs, such as labs like to chew things. Others like collies or healers are herding dogs and need something to herd...even children. Puppies just need a very firm hand and a lot of patience and training. Sorry that it didn't work out for you. Having a dog is like having another 2 year old...no matter how old the dog is. Stick with hermit crabs...they don't require much maintanance. Good job on recongizing that it wasn't working and i'm glad someone took her who has a good environment for her. We've done that a couple times too.

Sorry it didn't work out. :( dogs are totally puppies until 5 years I agree. If you do decide to get another dog later make sure to do some research into the temperament of the breed. Some breeds are really lazy and lay around all day,.. maybe that'd be great,.. I've never tried it. I know I am not a fan of most small breeds,.. they're yappy. Ours happen to have a pretty good temperament and only yap when they're playing with each other. which most of the day they sleep so it has not been too bad. However, ours would be a lot more yappy if we didn't do a lot of work in the beginning to discourage barking for everything and anything. Potty training is no fun so if you are considering a house dog you probably want an already potty trained one. Shedding is no fun. So if you're considering a house dog,.. be willing to put up with hair on everything,.. yes occasionally your food too since it gets on you and etc,..etc,.. a mini dachsund might be a good fit,.. who knows. Short hair, small size, but I've heard they can be yappy too so you'd probably want to observe it for a while before deciding on it. You just have to do your homework and make sure whatever you get suits your needs. :) And be willing to put in the work if you get one that is untrained or a puppy. :) As far as other pets go,...hermit crabs, fish, rabbits,..great!...Normally I have never liked cats. But our ragdoll cat is the most low maintenance cat ever and really sweet tempered.... they're very loyal to their master,.. get decently big and they come potty trained. :) If you ever decide to get a cat,.. I recommend a ragdoll. You might want to read up on this breed because it's so unique. Their temperament is perfect for a family because they are so lovey and let family hold them whenever and are fairly docile. Don't know about other cats...I've heard horror stories about other breeds of cats. you still have to worry about shedding with a ragdoll since they are technically a long haired cat. But they are very lovable and easy to have. That's my two cents. Hopefully you guys decide what's best for you eventually. :)

my dogs are finally outgrowing the chew on everything phase,.. btw,..I left that out,..they will still chew on stuff in the beginning until they've learned what their boundaries are,...my dogs will still get into things left on the coffee table while we're gone if they're left out. my cousin recommends crate training a dog for the first 2 years at least of life until they learn the rules of the house,.. basically you leave them in their crate all day everyday when you are not there. In the first couple months,..you leave them in there all day except to go to the bathroom until they learn to let you know when they have to go.

Just some advice if you did decide to get a puppy later on.
